JR Pass CoverWhen traveling in Japan the best way to get around is to take advantage of the superb Japan Rail System. Japan Railways is the number one system and covers the entire country. From a few days to a few weeks, whenever and wherever you travel in Japan the Japan Rail Pass is likely to be the most convenient and cost effective method of travel. The Japan Rail passes are only available to travellers visiting Japan with tourist (temporary visitor) visas. You must order your rail pass before you leave on your trip. You can not purchase the pass once in Japan.

After purchase you must validate your Japan Rail Pass within three months of purchase before it can be used. You can do this at any Japan Rail Pass Exchange Office, located in major JR Stations throughout the country, including those at Narita Airport (Tokyo) and Kansai International Airport (Osaka). You will need to show your passport when validating your JR Pass.

Green WindowA non-reserved seat (except for "NOZOMI" trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen) can be used simply by showing your validated Rail Pass when walking through the manned ticket barrier before you board the train. Seat reservations can be made without additional payment.To make a reservation, go to any Travel Service Center or a Reservation Office ("midori no madoguchi") at a JR station, or to the sales office of a JR-associated travel agency. There, show your PASS, and obtain your reserved-seat ticket before boarding. ("NOZOMI" and certain other train may require the payment of an additional charge.)

Japan Rail Pass Types

  1. Japan Rail Pass: This pass covers the entire Japan Railway JR system including some buses and ferries. You are able to travel everywhere in Japan with this Japan Rail pass. It comes in 7, 14 and 21 consecutive days. Each of these Japan Rail passes is available in Economy (Ordinary) and Green (First) Class.

  2. JR Hokkaido Pass: Enjoy travelling by train throughout Hokaido for 3 or 5 days. This pass is also available in Economy and Green Class.
  3. JR East Pass: This pass covers the Eastern half of Japan’s main island, Honshu. The pass is available in 5 and 10 consecutive days and a flexible 4 day pass. These passes are available in Economy and Green Class. The economy pass is also available is a Youth Pass for travellers between 12 and 25 years of age.

  4. JR West Pass: There are two types of JR West Rail Pass. The Sanyo Pass is valid from Osaka to Hakata, available in 4 and 8 days. The Kansai Pass is valid from Kyoto to Himeji and available in 1,2,3 and 4 days. These passes are available in Economy only.
  5. JR Kyushu Pass: Board all local, express and limited express trains operated by JR Kyushu. The Kyushu pass is available in a 3 and 5 day pass in economy only.
