When traveling in Japan the best way to get around is to take advantage of the superb Japan Rail System. Japan Railways is the number one system and covers the entire country. From a few days to a few weeks, whenever and wherever you travel in Japan the Japan Rail Pass is likely to be the most convenient and cost effective method of travel. The Japan Rail passes are only available to travellers visiting Japan with tourist (temporary visitor) visas or to Japanese nationals living in a foreign country who are qualified to live permanently in that country. You must order your rail pass before you leave on your trip. You can not purchase the pass once in Japan.
After purchase you must validate your Japan Rail Pass within three months of purchase before it can be used. You can do this at any Japan Rail Pass Exchange Office, located in major JR Stations throughout the country, including those at Narita Airport (Tokyo) and Kansai International Airport (Osaka). You will need to show your passport when validating your JR Pass.
A non-reserved seat (except for "NOZOMI" trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen) can be used simply by showing your validated Rail Pass when walking through the manned ticket barrier before you board the train. Seat reservations can be made without additional payment. To make a reservation, go to any Travel Service Center or a Reservation Office ("midori no madoguchi") at a JR station, or to the sales office of a JR-associated travel agency. There, show your PASS, and obtain your reserved-seat ticket before boarding. ("NOZOMI" and certain other train may require the payment of an additional charge.)
