Japan’s four major islands, Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku are covered by an extensive and reliable network of railways. About 70 percent of Japan’s railway network is owned and operated by the Japan Railways (JR), while the remaining 30 percent belongs to dozens of other private railway companies, especially in and around metropolitan areas.

The Japan Railways Group, more commonly known as JR Group (JRグループ), is made up of six regional passenger railway companies, which are JR Hokkaido, JR East, JR Central, JR West, JR Shikoku, and JR Kyushu, and one nationwide freight railway company, JR Freight. Together they operate a nationwide network of urban, regional and inter-regional train lines, night trains and shinkansen (bullet trains).

Tulips & Windmills in 2013

The tulips are spectacular and the windmills are amazing—both are must-see attractions. But this itinerary offers so much more than that. Holland and Belgium are called the Low Countries because large parts of them lie below sea level—which has necessitated a fascinating system of water management. PLUS, there are countless museums to visit, special events to attend and many more reasons to go in 2013.

While you are visiting Amsterdam’s Hermitage, you will be able to see 75 of Vincent van Gogh’s best works in a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition there. On March 21 the Amsterdam tulip is presented at the opening of this year’s Keukenhof Gardens flower show. The Concertgebouw, one of the greatest classical music venues in the world, celebrates its 125th birthday—and with Viking privileged access you can take a behind-the-scenes tour.

And if you go in April:

The long-awaited reopening of the Rijksmuseum, whose renovation will catapult it into the absolute top tier of European museums, is scheduled for April 13, 2013. Preparations are underway and the excitement is already building for Queen’s Day, the April 30 national celebration of the Royal House of Orange. The 2013 celebration will be quite special, because it is the 200th anniversary of the Dutch monarchy! The renovated Van Gogh Museum reopens; the museum celebrates its 40th anniversary along with the artist’s 140th birthday at the end of the month. Always one of Europe’s top destinations, Holland is having an extraordinary year in 2013. You can be part of it on a fabulous spring river cruise with Viking River Cruises.

JAL Increases International Fare Fuel Surcharge

jal-tsuru-logo.jpg Japan Airlines will increase the international fare fuel surcharge on all tickets issued between December 1st 2012 and Jan 31st, 2013.

Japan Airlines (JAL) has requested for approval from the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) to revise up the fuel surcharges applied on all international passenger tickets issued between December 1, 2012 and January 31, 2013 as detailed below.

JAL sets fuel surcharge levels bimonthly based on the 2-month average price of Singapore kerosene-type jet fuel. The price of Singapore kerosene-type jet fuel during the two month period of August and September 2012 averaged US$130.89 per barrel. With reference to the benchmark list for fiscal year 2012 (see below), this corresponds to Zone H of fuel surcharges which from December 2012, will range from 2,500 yen on a Japan - Korea ticket to 26,000 yen on a Japan - USA ticket per person per sector flown, on tickets purchased in Japan.

This level of surcharge will be applied to all international passenger tickets issued between December 1, 2012 and January 31, 2013.

Fuel Surcharge for tickets issued until November 30, 2012

Japan - Hawaii: US$ 170.00 (one-way)

Fuel Surcharge for December 1, 2012 – January 31, 2013

Japan - Hawaii: US$ 208.00 (one-way)

See the Japan Airlines website for more information.
