Tulips & Windmills in 2013
The tulips are spectacular and the windmills are amazing—both are must-see attractions. But this itinerary offers so much more than that. Holland and Belgium are called the Low Countries because large parts of them lie below sea level—which has necessitated a fascinating system of water management. PLUS, there are countless museums to visit, special events to attend and many more reasons to go in 2013.

If you go in March:
2013 is a designated year to celebrate Dutch–Russian relations, and one of the related events is the Czar Peter the Great exhibition in Amsterdam’s Hermitage Museum. While you are visiting Amsterdam’s Hermitage, you will be able to see 75 of Vincent van Gogh’s best works in a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition there. On March 21 the Amsterdam tulip is presented at the opening of this year’s Keukenhof Gardens flower show. The Concertgebouw, one of the greatest classical music venues in the world, celebrates its 125th birthday—and with Viking privileged access you can take a behind-the-scenes tour.
And if you go in April:
The long-awaited reopening of the Rijksmuseum, whose renovation will catapult it into the absolute top tier of European museums, is scheduled for April 13, 2013. Preparations are underway and the excitement is already building for Queen’s Day, the April 30 national celebration of the Royal House of Orange. The 2013 celebration will be quite special, because it is the 200th anniversary of the Dutch monarchy! The renovated Van Gogh Museum reopens; the museum celebrates its 40th anniversary along with the artist’s 140th birthday at the end of the month. Always one of Europe’s top destinations, Holland is having an extraordinary year in 2013. You can be part of it on a fabulous spring river cruise with Viking River Cruises.
