Okinawa Reduces Travel Time to Naha International Aiport

A work in progress since 1992, a new three kilometer stretch of highway and tunnel connecting Naha International Airport and the Wakasa district of Naha City near Tomari Grand Bridge is now nearing completion.

The tunnel stretches some 800 meters under the ocean, and should reduce travel time on the crowded drive from downtown Naha City to the airport by an estimated 8-10 minutes.

Two tunnels on the sides of the harbor support the tunnel system. One tower used for ventilation is filled with air control systems to, the second is equipped with emergency pump systems to evacuate water in event of flooding or typhoons.
