It ranks as one of the four best museums in the world, in a class with the Louvre, the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The museum holds the world’s largest collection of Chinese artifacts, around 700,000 items in all. Since the museum only has space to display around 15,000 pieces at any given time, the majority of the treasures are kept well protected in air-conditioned vaults buried deep in the mountainside. The displays are rotated once every three months, which means 60,000 pieces can be viewed in a year and it would take nearly 12 years to see them all. Furthermore, the collection continues to grow through donations and purchases.

Your tour begins with Jade Buddha Temple. It was built during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty (A.D. 1875-1909) with its priceless collection of jade statues from Burma. The construction of the temple is in the magnificent architectural style of the Song Dynasty. There are monks currently living in the Temple and the Temple houses the Shanghai Buddhist Institute. Next stop is Fresh Water Pearl Gallery. We may see the process of pearl cultivation. One lucky participant will be presented with a single pearl from a mussel. People Square is a spectacular space in the heart of the city. It is a vast green area including plants and trees, and surrounded by great buildings on all sides, where you may feed the lovely doves to pray for the world peace.

MAY 23 SUN – SHANGHAI – SUZHOU & ZHOUZHUANG

Breakfast at the hotel.

Morning Drive to Suzhou in Jiangsu Province, one of the most important tourist destinations in China. Of course, Suzhou works hard at this role, and it shows. Suzhou’s sights and attractions are numerous and well taken care of. The best examples are the classical gardens of Suzhou, which may be the aspect of this city most well-known to foreigners. Maintaining these gardens is a lot of work, but well worth it as Suzhou has become famous not just throughout China but across the world. Of Suzhou’s gardens, the most famous in the West is the Garden of the Master of the Nets. However, there are many more gardens to experience like the Humble Administrator’s Garden. We continue to Zhouzhuang, one of the most famous water townships in China, situated in Kunshan City which is only 30 kilometers (18 miles) southeast of Suzhou. It is noted for its profound cultural background, the well preserved ancient residential houses, the elegant watery views and the strong local colored traditions and customs. In the Spring and Autumn Period (770 - 476 BC), Zhouzhuang was a part of the fief Yaocheng and called Zhenfengli. After being donated to Full Fortune (Quanfu) Temple by Zhou Digong, a very devout Buddhist, in 1086 during the Northern Song Dynasty (960 - 1127), Zhouzhuang got its present name as a memorial of the donor.
